OK, it’s a chain hotel, but the Malmaison chain has gained a good reputation for its stylish properties, and for a higher level of care and attention to detail than one might expect. The most interesting property of theirs has to be their Oxford branch. Housed in the imposing Oxford Castle, a former prison, a number of elements of the interior has been left intact, Victorian iron doors and railings included, giving it a decidedly unique feel. These days however, the cells are a tad more comfortable than in the building’s previous incarnation. Indeed each guest room is composed of three cells, decorated in rich colours with opulent en suite bathrooms. The former governor’s house boasts some amazing semi-circular suites. Everything is executed with predictable Malmaison slickness, but there’s no doubt that the building is the true star here.
