A regular entrant on lists of the best restaurants in New York, Masa is the brainchild of Masa Takayama, a true god of all things sushi. And, while it’s true, that it’s also one of the most expensive restaurants in the city (the tasting menu can easily set you back over $400 per person), the sheer quality of the Masa experience: the thought, the detail, the perfection of every element, just about justifies the damage to your wallet.
To really reap the most from your meal, be sure to get a seat at the bar rather than at one of the small tables. From here you can appreciate the full theatrical spectacle of the chefs at work – cooking as performance art. Watching as they slice, flip and fold the exquisite ingredients, including truffles, caviar, lobster and kobe beef is quite exhilarating, making each dish an event before it even reaches your plate. Each bite of sushi is perfectly proportioned and every piece of fish is the best of its kind. Of course you’ll need to book well advance, but this is a unique restaurant experience, and the attendant reservation-wrangling will be worth it.
