With its cobbled streets, gabled houses and meandering canals, Bruges is the perfect place to escape for a few days. Almost traffic free and ridiculously picturesque, it’s a tranquil and elegant destination. The collapse of trade routes meant that the town remained as it was for almost 400 years, its medieval streets almost unchanged - a hike up the 366 steps to the top of the belfry in the main square will reveal the full extent of its well-preserved beauty. Or, if you’ve no head for heights, sit with a plate of frites and a cooling Belgian beer in one of the many elegant cafes.

This being Belgium there are enough chocolate emporia to please even the sweetest of teeth. Avoid the main drag near the station, where novelty chocolates shaped like breasts (Why? Why?) are proudly displayed in windows and head elsewhere. The internationally renowned Neuhaus is one of the best but there are other independent stores that are equally good. If your appetites in this area still aren’t sated, then the town’s Choco-Story museum is definitely worth a visit.

Reviews of Medieval Bruges

Spent a lovely weekend here in 2005. Chocolate, art and beautiful ancient buildings - I was very happy.

My score:

A beautiful city, an ideal place to spend a leisurely weekend. Take one of the canal boat tours if you get the chance, and of course, explore the chocolate shops. Neuhaus may be famous, but some of the smaller independent ones are just as good.
