What first springs to mind when you think of a trip to the theatre in London? The seedy glitz of the West End? Stuffy Victorian playhouses with their velvet seats and proscenium arches? Of course this all exists, but as with Broadway and New York, the big venues are only half the story.
One of London’s most exciting fringe theatres resides in a side street near London Bridge. No prizes for guessing what the Menier Chocolate Factory was in a previous incarnation; now this attractive late Victorian building has been converted into a studio theatre with a gallery space and restaurant attached. Under the management of David Babani, the Menier has quickly gained a reputation, carving a niche for itself as the producer of small-scale but imaginative musicals. Recent hits have included versions of Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick…Boom! and Jason Robert Brown’s song cycle The Last Five Years.
Both their productions of Sondheim’s Sunday in The Park With George and kitsch cult classic Little Shop of Horrors ended up West-End bound. Make a full night of it with dinner in the restaurant beforehand, where the menu is often themed in accordance with whatever’s playing in the theatre.
Reviews of Menier Chocolate Factory
Really enjoyed Take Flight, their current musical - it's about aviation, which doesn't sound that exciting, but they make it work. It's nice to get away from the high prices and stuffy theatres of the West End and do something different now and then.

Great little theatre - and the cafe is pretty cool too. Seating is unreserved though, so there's always a bit of a scrabble for the best seats when the house doors open.

Superb theatre - one of the best fringe venues in London. Their production of Little Shop of Horrors was brilliant. I took my theatre-phobic brother and he adored it.

One of London's best fringe theatres. Their production of Little Shop has been so successful that it is now transferring to the West End and their staging of Sunday in the Park With George was one of my top shows of 2006.
