It is known the world over simply as The Met. And it is probably the most important museum in New York, if not the world. It has appeared in thousands of postcards, books and films, and can seem so big at times it is almost like a city in its own right.
Established in 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the most treasured collection of art in America, more than two million pieces of work from every part of the globe, dating back 500 years. From weapons and armor exhibits to Medieval works, fashion displays and collections of European and American sculptures and master paintings, there is very little you won't find in its vast galleries and rooms. It pays to do a little advance reading and work out what you want to see ahead of time, because to do it all in one visit would be impossible. And if you go get all arted-out, remember the Roof Garden Cafe overlooking Central Park is the perfect place to sip a coffee or glass of wine in, and gear yourself up for more. Not to be missed.
