Although it’s the second tallest of its kind in the world (after the Qutub Minar in Delhi), the Minaret of Jam was lost for centuries. Surrounded by a mountain range reaching 2400 metres altitude in western Afghanistan and by the Hari Rud river, the baked brick and bands of glazed tile of the intricately detailed, slender tower blend into the background an eerily natural way.
The tower was built in the 12th century to commemorate the victory of a Ghurid Sultan and was subsequently lost to the outside world until 1886. Years of erosion and looting have earned it a place on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. The Minaret of Jam is one of the most impressive buildings you'll see in your lifetime, not the least as a result of everything it’s survived.
