New York is the undisputed cultural capital of the United States. The Guggenheim, the Met, the Frick – that’s three of the greatest galleries in the world right there. And then there’s the Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA as it’s known to pretty much everyone. Centrally located in the heart of Manhattan, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, it has been one of America's foremost modern art galleries since its opening in 1929. The museum's permanent collection includes works by Van Gogh (including his famous Starry Night), Monet, Dali, Warhol, Pollock, and many other major artists of the 20th century. The building itself has recently been given a subtle but effective redesign by the Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi. A superb space, white-walled and magnificent, you could easily lose an afternoon here wondering the corridors. A visit to MoMA should be an essential part of any visit to the Big Apple.
