For a sizeable section of the world's population, the conjunction of the words 'beer' and 'festival' into a single sentence – and the possibilities evoked – is almost as close to heaven as it gets. And, as those people probably know, no other beer festival comes close to comparing with Munich's legendary Oktoberfest.
For two weeks every autumn, the Bavarian town plays host to vast numbers of visitors (it's the biggest public festival in the world, with very good reason) eager to celebrate, and consume large quantities of, their favourite tipple.
Known by the locals as the "Wiesn", each festival begins with the tapping of a keg of beer by the Mayor of Munich and a special – and usually pretty potent – Oktoberfest beer is brewed for the occasion. To mop up all the alcohol, a wide variety of food is available, much of it excellent ale-fodder, from traditional German sausage and sauerkraut to noodles, and roast ox-tail, a Bavarian speciality.

I was at Oktoberfest this past year ('07) and had a blast! Everyone was very friendly and if you want to drink great beer, have good food and meet a lot of friendly people, this is the place to be the end of September/begining of October.
