This extraordinary museum designed by American architect Frank Ghery transformed the city of Bilbao into one of the art capitals of the world overnight when it opened in 1997. Built along the Nervion River, it's a masterpiece of swooping, curving steel panels that resemble fish scales; a surreal, futuristic contrast alongside the more historic buildings of the city.
Yet, while the building is a work of art in its own right, the modern art inside the museum is equally impressive. The permanent collection displays traditional 20th century paintings and sculpture but leans more towards conceptual installations and electronic art that is in keeping with its contemporary manifesto. Recent sculptural highlights meanwhile include large-scale works by Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois and Richard Serra
