Vang Vieng is both central Laos and central backpackerville. Don’t come here to escape the traveller’s trail, but do come for Vang Vieng’s infamous river rapids. The Nam Song River hits a bend nearby and kicks up rather a fuss about it in the process, resulting in several kilometres of largely benevolent river rapids ideal for tackling in a rubber ring (what else?) As always, it’s a case of safety in numbers, but such mindlessly silly activities are also far more amusing when shared with others. So hire half a dozen rings in town with friends and hike 20minutes north before leaping in. Feel free to be sidetracked by limestone cliff jumps or intriguingly dark caves along the way and keep an eye out for enterprising locals setting up makeshift bars on the riverbank. Just make sure you have your travel insurance in order beforehand.
