India is packed with architectural wonders. That goes without saying. A good proportion of the country’s take-your-breath away buildings can be found in Jaipur. Chief among them is Hawa Mahal, which literally translates as palace of the winds. It is an important landmark in the pink city, a truly majestic structure. The chief attraction is the exterior, with its myriad latticed windows, however inside the dramatic appearance is not reflected. Still it’s an undoubtedly stunning building, unique and bewitching. Built in 1799, by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, it was initially designated as quarters for the women of the royal household, and the windows were there to allow the women to look out at the bustling city. A stately entrance leads to a spacious and striking courtyard. Here you’ll find a small archaeological museum. But really a visit here is about getting your camera out and snapping away at one of the most distinctive buildings on the sub-continent.
