Palace on Wheels
India is famous for its trains and none are as magnificent as the Palace on Wheels, a five-star week-long royal rail ride that sets off from Delhi every Wednesday and returns a week later having taken your through the magical desert cities of Rajasthan to the west. Stops include ancient Jaipur, with its Amber Fort; Jaisalmer in the Thar Desert; and the walled city of Jodhpur which dates back to 1459, its inspiring rock-built Mehrangarh Fort looking straight out of fairy tale fantasy. Sitting in your luxurious carpeted cabin, or dining on curries in one of the two palatial dining rooms will make you feel as pampered as a Maharaja, and even when you get to stop for camel rides, palace tours and walks with elephants, you know the comfort of your room on rails awaits.
