Paris in the summer can get pretty hot. Fortunately for Parisians and visitors to the city in a need of a quick cool-off, some inventive soul has come up with an ideal solution. The Paris Plage is a stretch of sand along the banks of the Seine where you can laze on a sun-lounger, sink your feet into the sand, and enjoy all the pleasures of a day at the beach without leaving the heart of the city. For one month every summer, the Georges Pompidou Expressway along Paris’s Right Bank transforms into a refuge for those Parisians unable, or unkeen to, swap the capital for the coast. The Paris Plage is peppered with beach chairs, cafes, cooling fountains, and shady palm trees – and there are even pools for people to take a dip (because for all their efforts to make this beach-like, the Seine isn’t for swimming). Since it began in 2002, the Paris Plage has become an urban oasis in the truest sense, bringing a small slice of the seaside to the city of lights each summer.
