Long feted as the crowning glory of the Acropolis and of Athens, the Parthenon is 2,500 years old and the largest Doric temple of Pentelic marble built by the ancient Greeks. It is fair to say that it is weighed down these days by its impossibly exalted status as the single most important ancient monument of Western civilisation, which is a hard billing to live up to, but the entire site was the subject of a lengthy restoration project in the run-up to the 2004 Olympic Games and still offers a remarkable glimpse into the past. Among the crowds, you may find it hard to slip into a daydream about the Acropolis's long-forgotten parades and legendary soldiers, or feel hard-pushed to re-imagine the Parthenon in its heyday as the leading temple of a civilisation, but is still possible to marvel at an architectural feat rich in symbolic power, and to feel the weight of history.

Reviews of The Parthenon

Our visit to the Acropolis and to see the Parthenon in person after so many years of seeing pictures of this incredible historic site in school books was awe inspiring. I had cold chills as I made my way up the ancient steps of the Propyla. That first full view of the building I had wanted to see since a child was just fantastic!

My score:

Where modern Athens meets ancient Greece. The Parthenon was built in a mystical way that shows the Ancient Greeks were far more advanced in mathematics -and beyond- than any of the modern nations.
