The Petronas Towers in Malaysia

Taipei 101 may have stolen its clothes as the tallest building in the world, but the Petronas Twin Towers are the kings of the architecture world. The 88 storey monsters soar like imperial gatekeepers into the Kuala Lumpur sky, rising 1483 feet and encompassing 32,000 windows. Made from glass and steel they are built on a geometric Islamic pattern – a traditional eight pointed star. You cannot go to the top, but the 192 foot skybridge which links the 41st and 42nd floors of the two buildings is something special. Kuala Lumpar pans out like an old-fashioned lumpy if gleaming tablecloth below, and you will have to pinch yourself to believe the view. Get there early before the rush – visitor numbers are limited strictly each day. Then take a deep breath and take in what what US$1.2 billion worth of building and the summit of man’s architectural imagination feels like.

Reviews of The Petronas Towers

Amazing sight at night - sitting outside in the bar of the opposite Hotel Maya!!

Don't just visit the towers during the day - they are lit up like a Xmas tree at night and you can take the most magnificent photos without any flash or extra equipment.

Petronas Twin Towers truly represents how far Malaysia has come in just a few decades. The viewing platform connecting the two towers gives you an amazing view of Kuala Lumpur, with the city's mix of beautiful colonial-style buildings and the latest in high tech architecture.

The only bad thing is that you are only allowed to stay up there for a short time, as there are so many visitors to the towers. The solution, of course, would be to get a job at the state petroleum company that resides there.

It's a really handsome building.

When you're told to go there early in the morning, heed the warning by all means. The busload of tourists disembarking from the queue of buses in front of the driveway of the building is a serious indication as to how popular it is. Of course, you should allow yourself at least 2 days to visit the towers (just in case you don't get to visit it on the first day that you try). Of course, if you were lucky enough to visit it twice, then try to get up the tower at different times. The city of Kuala Lumpur looks strikingly different when the afternoon sunlight works it way across the cityscape, casting different shadows. DO remember to bring your digital cameras and have a polarising lens too. And of course, absorb the experience of walking across the adjoining bridge, especially on a windy day- trust me, it's like nothing you've experienced before.
