Port, the sweet fortified wine, is one of Portugal’s biggest exports. Produced from grapes grown and processed in the Douro Valley region, the wine is then fortified with the addition of distilled grape spirits in order to boost the alcohol content. The wine is then aged in barrels before being bottled.

Port takes its name from the picturesque town of Porto, a seaport city at the mouth of the Douro River. Dark in colour, Port wine is typically richer and heavier than most other wines. The suburb of Vila Nova de Gaia is where the bulk of this fine ruby liquid is produced. There are over 50 port producers within the narrow lanes where the wines are aged and blended. This is the place to head for tours and tasting. The Port Wine Institute on Rua Ferreira Borges is also a great place to go to sample many types of port in an intimate living room atmosphere.

Reviews of Port in Porto

I know that this is about drinking Port in Porto - which, yes, is well worth experiencing - but Porto itself is a beautiful city that is spread across both banks of the Douro River. There are lots of Port makers along the main stretch of the river and most offer a free tour and tasting in the hope that you will buy a few bottles from them.
