Punting on the river Cam has to be the quintessential 'Cambridge' experience. To punt means to sit in a long wooden boat and propel yourself along by pushing a pole against the shallow river bottom – in a manner not dissimilar to how gondolas manoeuvre their way around Venice. You can either travel along the Backs (the gardens behind the various Cambridge colleges) or head out towards the village of Grantchester. To really make it a day to remember, take a little picnic of strawberries and champagne to sip as you drift down the river. You can pay a guide, but self-hire is much more fun. It costs around £12 per hour per punt, though this price tends to climbs at weekends and in the busy summer months. It can take a little while to get your balance, so try not to fall in – though an unplanned dip in the river is also something of a celebrated Cambridge experience.

Reviews of Punting in Cambridge

Cambridge is a beautiful English town full of old world charm. Winters are cold and dull but the town comes alive in the summer. A pint by the river's side is a must - you can hear languages from all around the world. I prefer it to London any day!
