The picturesque Lake District is one of the most visited places in the whole of England. It comprises 15 shimmering lakes, the best known of which are Ullswater, Windermere, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite. There are several beautiful falls and some of England's highest peaks including the famous Scafell Pike. It’s a truly stunning region, which despite its popularity, never feels overwhelmed; you can always lose yourself in the landscape, the endless green hills, the tranquil waters.
The Lakes make the perfect spot for walkers: there are plenty of well-marked trails and stunning views wherever you look. The stone circle near Keswick and the ruins of old castles and churches are particularly worth exploring. Over the centuries the area has been an inspiration to many English artists and writers, most notably the poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Spend a few days wandering the lakeside paths with the wind at your back and you may well be equally inspired.

Just returned from a perfect stay in the Lake District. We stayed at Armathwaite Hall Country House, where we were able to quad bike in the grounds and then spend a leisurly afternoon by the pool. I proposed to my fiance there and we will return to the Lakes to marry.
