Orangutans have more in common with human beings than most people realise. And they are in severe danger of extinction. Most estimates reckon that there are only 20,000 left in the wilds of Borneo and Sumatra, the huge islands in the Indian Ocean which are their natural habitat. But because of illegal logging, destructive agricultural practices, poaching and forest fires, these intelligent primates are thought to be disappearing at a rate of 1,000 a year. Assistance is needed urgently and you can help provide it.
Several organisations offer the chance to sponsor an orangutan – which can mean anything from reintegrating a captured creature into its natural habitat to providing it with basic food, water and shelter. The BOS (Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation) is the best known, while the Sepilok Orangutan Appeal in the UK allows you to name one of the animals yourself in return for sponsorship. Some companies even offer tours to the teemingly diverse rainforests of Borneo, with proceeds going towards the long-term survival of the species. Asia’s only great ape could be extinct within three years, but it doesn’t need to be like this. Your help is needed now.
