Ascot racetrack in the idyllic Berkshire village of that name is synonymous with one of the grandest events of the English sporting and social calendar: Royal Ascot. Attended by more than 300,000 people, making it the most popular racing event in Europe, it dates back to 1711 and is closely associated with the British Royal Family. Beginning on a Tuesday in June with six races a day for five days, highlights include the Queen Anne Stakes, the Coronation Stakes, and the prestigious Gold Cup, which takes place on Ladies day Thursday, a day as famous for the quality of the racing as for the often ridiculous and frequently stunning array of colourful hats worn by visiting royals and celebrities. For pageantry, style and a glimpse into English high society, this is up there with Henley.
