That glint of metal high above you, spanning the Arkansas River? That’s the Royal Gorge Bridge, which at 1,053 feet is the highest suspension bridge in the world. Even without this striking structure, the gorge, near Cañon City, Colorado, is a spectacular sight. Hewn out of the rock over millennia it’s dramatic and awesome in the truest sense of the word.
In the summer months the rapids below have become a popular spot for white-water rafting and if that’s not quite enough to sate your adrenaline urge, than a visit to the nearby Royal Gorge Park is a must. A ride up past the sheer walls of the gorge, on the world's largest single-span Aerial Tram is bound to quicken the pulse. There are other equally nerve-jangling rides on site (the Royal Rush Skycoaster is definitely worth checking out), but for many the ultimate, unsurpassable thrill here is the views supplied by the gorge itself.
