It’s not the most obvious way to spend the day after Christmas. But, despite that, every year on Boxing Day, on Seaburn Beach near Sunderland, thousands of sane, eager people choose to burn off that second helping of turkey by donning fancy dress and hurtling down the beach into the icy waters of the North Sea. It’s all for a good cause, of course, with the money raised by the event going to charity. But it’s also a unique and entertaining way to avoid that post-Christmas lull. The event was started in 1974, by organizers Sunderland Lions and has since become a firm fixture on the festive calendar for the area. For most people, save for a few hardy souls, their ‘dip’ involves a quick dash into the sea and an even quicker dash back out again, to be bundled in blankets and fill up on hot drinks. But it’s the taking part that counts and the sense of community spirit that permeates the event - even the mayor participates. Prizes are given for the best fancy dress and, in 2005, over £50,000 was raised for charity.
