Minimalism has its place. Sometimes we all rave clean lines and white walls. And sometimes the opposite is true, sometimes we need to sate our inner kid with bright colours and playful furnishings. Well, if you’re feeling in the latter mood, you’ll want to check out Athens’ Semiramis Hotel. Every surface is curvy and candy-coloured, understatement is a tabboo term and a sense of fun permeates each of the 52 rooms. There are ice-cream couches and bright green walls, amoeba-shaped caushions and blobs and splatters of gleefully clashing colour; many of the bungalow suites even have their own pool. Given all this, it perhaps isn’t a huge surpise that owner Dakis Joannou is a huge fan of the pop art movement and uses the hotel to house his impressive collection. The restaurant, run by renowned chef Yiannis Loukakos, is a very popular local spot and is certianly worth investigating regardless of whether the over-the-top aethetic of the place appeals or sends you running for the hills.
