Shark Bay in Australia

useful links

Official Site (sharkbay.asn.au)

Shark Bay has to be one of the most scenic places in Australia. Covering some 1500 km of coast, it is also one of great historical significance as it was here that Europeans first made contact with Australia; in fact the area was named by William Dampier, one of the first Europeans to set foot in the country.

As a result of its historical and natural importance, it has been designated a World Heritage Site, and rightly so. Peppered with pristine bays, inlets and islands, the region is one of rare and distinctive natural beauty. The famously clear waters allow for brilliant viewing of turtles, whales and manta rays, not to mention dolphins.

The popular resort of Monkey Mia in particular is renowned as a great place to see bottlenose dolphins in the wild. For the past forty years these fascinating creatures have been venturing close to the shore to be fed, and you can join the crowds, knee-deep in blissfully warm water, to watch this amazing event. Shark Bay is a rich and diverse area and one you’re sure to want to explore.

Reviews of Shark Bay

Great views of sea creatures, especially from eagles bluff, and wide open beaches are in abundance. Monkey Mia is amazing but overrun with tourists. The weather is gorgeous pretty much all the time. A hidden place no one knows about is Ocean Park, a small aquarium/research center run by two marine biologists. For a ten dollar fee you can get up close to turtles, sharks, sea snakes, and other cool wildlife. It's a low budget operation that's off the map - but well worth it.
