There was much media hoopla when fashionable restaurant Sketch opened in London’s Mayfair. A lot of this was down to the fact that a meal in the Lecture Room was, at the time, one of the most expensive dining experiences in London. This all rather obscured the fact that Sketch was one of the most interesting and distinctive eateries to open in the UK capital for years.
Conceived by super-chef Pierre Gagnaire and Algerian-born restaurateur Mourad Mazouz (of Momo fame), Sketch combines several different spaces: the elegant but mega-pricey Lecture Room and Library, the less formal but no less spectacularly decked-out Gallery (quirkily mismatched tables and video art on the walls) and the gorgeously theatrical Glade. Portions are on the small side but presentation is always immaculate and inspired; critics and customers agree that the sinfully good desserts served in the Parlour patisserie are a must-try.
With coffee served in rubber cups and their much-discussed egg-shaped toilets, the place can at times feel a little too much, bordering on the ridiculous. But that’s all part of its appeal.

Amazingly designed place. The bar, restaurants, the food, the service, the drinks are all great (with a price tag to match). And the toilets are the best of all: sit (or stand) in an egg and relax! One of our dinner guests felt so relaxed that he caught 20 winks while in there!
