Thai New Year, or Songkran as it is known, is celebrated every year from 13 to 15 April. If you’re in Bangkok for the festivities watch you may well get wet, as one of the main ways the new year is celebrated with the throwing of water. This custom has actual springs from the Thai tradition of sprinkling water on people’s hands as a mark of respect, but these days it’s done in a more boisterous fashion, with water-fights a common sight over the holiday period, which given that April is the hottest month in Thailand, serves the dual purpose of being quite a lot of fun and also helping to keep you cool. Songkran is very much a family festival: people go to temples to pray, give food to monks and bathe the images of Buddha in the temples with water and perfume, in order bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year.
