Dedicated to the archangel Michael, St. Michaelis is one of Hamburg's five main protestant churches and the most famous church in the city. A key feature of the Hamburg skyline, the church's distinctive 132 m high, copper-covered baroque spire is known affectionately as ‘Michel’, and can be seen from all over the city. And, if you make it to the top, you’ll be able to see the entire city in return. A rather cramped lift is one way to make it up there, but of course the more enjoyable, if physically challenging, option is to take the steps. Over 130m of steep climbing offers plenty of rewards at the end, especially on clear days when visibility is high. A 3Euro entrance fee seems to do a good job of keeping crowds to a relative minimum too, making it a far less stressful experience than struggling for a glimpse of New York’s skyline from the Disneyfied Empire State Building.
