It's certainly a must as far as landmarks go, but it's a hassle. It's always crowded, especially on the weekends and usually a there's a two hours or more wait to climb to the top. It you're patient and don't plan on doing much in one day, it's a great idea. But if you're trying to maximize your time in New York, best save this trip for an all-day adventure.
MusiqJunkie68, New York City 31/1/2008The statue is beautiful. I viewed her only from the ferry as we were pressed for time, but she is impressive even at a distance. I was struck by the fact that she faces toward the city and consequently has her back toward the entrance of the harbor!
galwayshawl, Esmond 16/3/2007Over rated. If you've seen any of the films that feature The Statue of Liberty then you've seen enough. It's only worth going to say you've been there, but quite frankly I would rather say I've been to places like the Taj Mahal or Ankor Wat.
Snatch, 24/5/2006I viewed the Statue from the Staten Island Ferry (it's free!!) and against the blue sky backdrop, she was an impressive figure. After everything New York has been through, the Statue of Liberty is a beacon of light.
Melissa79, london 04/11/2005I viewed the Green Goddess from the Statton Island Ferry. New York is very lucky to be set by the sea, and it's the best way to see the statue and the skyline.
With New York you always get that sense of familiarity, gained through so many films, but the Statue of Liberty surprised me. It is so much smaller in real life, but none-the-less as humbling as the mighty buildings that are her backdrop.
As you can no longer climb to the top the sea view is my preferred option.
It was such a nice experience seeing the statue of liberty. i was so excited to go there that i just couldn't wait for the next day. it was awesome! but too bad we wasn't able to go up to her crown.
jugs, new york 15/9/2005I found the trip to the Statue fascinating! The park rangers were excellent guides and the exhibit telling you how the Statue came about was interesting.
It was disappointing to not be allowed up into the crown(post 9/11) but you can look up the statue from the base.
It is a beautiful structure up close.
It is worth going to Ellis Island and the immigration museum also.
My husband surprised me with a 5 day trip to New York for Valentines day this year 2005, it was cold and windy, the day we decided to go to the Statue we had to queue for a while to get boat passes and apparently you have to pre order tickets to go on the island with the Statue,we were able to purchase tickets to get off the boat when we bought our tickets so I don't know how true the pre ordering is.
It was so cold and windy that day we decicide not to get off the boat and it seems that there were a lot of people like minded.
It was an awesome sight to see but also a little disappointing I don't know why maybe I expected her to be bigger as when you see her on the tv you don't always get to see Manhattan behind her.
We also went over her in a helicopter and that was something else, all in all I would say yes go see her as it is an experience just don't chose a day that's windy or take a hairband with you.
I didn't manage to climb into her head but then, the old lady didn't get into mine either. Perhaps, she didn't affect me emotionally because I am not an American and I am not steeped in the history of her. For me she was really no more moving visually than a Henry Moore Statue. She's there, therefore she exists.
