At 3,560ft, Mount Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales, which makes it a popular destination for climbers. But why use up all that energy when you can take a beautiful vintage coal-powered steam engine from Llanberis Station all the way to the top?
In operation since 1896, the four-mile long rack-and-pinion system is one of the most impressive feats of engineering, but the stunning views from the comfort of your carriage are the real highlight. From Llanberis the train passes through thick woodland and across a viaduct before beginning the climb up the mountain itself, with stunning views from the summit of rolling valleys below and the ocean beyond. On clear days you can even make out the Isle and Man and the mountains of Ireland. Give yourself three hours for the trip and if you go early enough you might still have time to climb the mountain before dark. (During 2007 the summit station building will be closed for repairs)
