Cannes may win in terms of glamour (floor-sweeping gowns and teetering heels don’t mix too well with the deep Utah snowdrifts) and Toronto has the edge in terms of sheer scale, but the ultimate film fans’ film festival has to be Sundance.
Founded by Robert Redford in 1981, Sundance has always favoured independent movie-making and played a pivotal role in developing new cinematic talent. Contemporary classics like Sex, Lies and Videotape, Reservoir Dogs, Memento and Napoleon Dynamite have all gained recognition at Sundance they may not have otherwise received. The world’s cinematic landscape would look very different were it not for this place.
Taking place in Utah’s Park City, a trip to Sundance is a great experience. Every January, numerous directors and stars make the trip to the high-altitude town (be warned, the thin air can take some getting used to) to participate in post screening Q&As. A celebratory atmosphere prevails throughout the festival; so pack your snow-boots and your sunglasses, and remember that the shy chap in the corner at the Opening Weekend festivities may just be the next Tarantino.
The 2009 festival runs between 15th and 25th of January.
