San Francisco's Swan Oyster Depot is an example of fast food as it once was, fresh, simple and tasty, devoid of the Supersize tactics of the global grease-merchants. As a result the 20 seats at the counter fill up quickly, but most customers only stay for a quick cup of chowder, so it's worth getting in line.
The Depot was founded in 1912 and it has built a reputation on its friendly, efficient service and of course it's achingly fresh seafood dishes. Opt for a plate of oysters on the half-shell for a classic San Fran experience, but bear in mind they also serve crab, shrimp, lobster and smoked fish. It may be tiny and cramped, but it's the food that counts and it won't disappoint.

What a fantastic repertoire of bivalve mollusks, and crustacians! Definitely a "must do" for anyone who enjoys oysters, clams, crabs or shrimp, all fresh from the oceans of the world. Worth the wait if you have to. Come early if you don't want to wait for a seat.
