Temple Bar is Dublin’s cultural quarter, a warren of atmospheric streets in the city centre. One of the oldest areas of the city, it is bounded by the Liffey to the north, Dame Street to the south, Westmoreland Street to the east and Fishamble Street to the west. It is said to have got its name from the Temple family, who lived in the area in the 17th century.
These days the area buzzes with life - true, there are a fair few bars catering to the tourists and steps had to be taken a couple of years ago to stop the area from getting too rowdy - but it is also the home of many Irish cultural institutions, as well as numerous enticing restaurants and interesting shops. You’ll never be short of something to do – there are outdoor film screenings in the summer months in Meeting House Square, as well as popular weekend markets. Check out Temple Bar Book Market or the Cow’s Lane Design Market in the Old City if you fancy taking home something more exciting then a shamrock tea-towel.
