You’re alarm goes off. You’re in Paris, it’s early, and the sun is barely tickling the waters of the Seine; you’re tempted to ignore it, and on any other day perhaps you would. But not today. Today, my friend, is a day for art.

The problem with being one of the oldest, largest and most famous art galleries and museums in the world is that everyone wants to visit. If you prefer your art unimpeded by the baseball cap-clad heads of a coach party, an early start is recommended. It’ll be worth it. Some of the greatest works of art you’ll ever see are housed within the long, ornate corridors of this former palace. The Venus de Milo, Leonardo da Vinci’s Madonna of the Rocks and, of course, his Mona Lisa, perhaps the most famous painting in existence.

Don’t plan on seeing everything in one trip alone, it’s too vast to take in, and even the most hardy art lovers risk museum fatigue if they try. Pick a wing or a section that most appeals to your interests and take your time. And, on you’re way out, don’t forget to pause, for photographs, or simply to take stock of all you’ve just seen, beside Mario Pei’s still controversial glass pyramid in the Louvre courtyard.

Reviews of The Louvre

Sometimes we take things for granted because they are so well known. this is one of them, I think. The Louvre may be world famous, but it's a truly amzing place, an experience worth having whether you know a lot about art or not. There's just so much to see.

In a city so rich with amazing galleries and museums, The Louvre still stands out as being the best. The sheer volume of treasures on display is second to none, though the crowds can make it difficult to see some of the more famous works (the Mona Lisa in particular) so go really early or really late in the day if you can.

One of the best museums in the world without question. And yes, one trip alone won't do it justice. I like to go later in the afternoon, when entrance fees tend to be cheaper and the crowds slightly thinner.

Truly too large to take everything in - I spent a whole day in the museum, alone, without distractions. I never got out of the antiquities section. In fact, I don't think I ever got out of the very ancient Mideast section. Every few rooms, you run across some French children listening to their teacher lecture about an exhibit. Yes, it is crowded, but so vast and spacious and comfortable. World class museum - in a world class city in a great country!

There are regular opportunities to spend time in the Louvre with free admission - I don't remember what day. I might be Sunday evenings.
