Taormina is the most glamorous resort on the island of Sicily. It’s a lively, sophisticated and hugely appealing place, its ancient streets bustling with life. Taormina has its far share of spectacular sights and vistas but the most remarkable of these has to be the ancient theatre (known as the Teatro Greco or the ‘Greek theatre’). One of the most famous ruins in Sicily, it is incredibly well preserved and stunningly situated. Built of brick, the theatre is the second largest of its kind in Sicily (the one at Syracuse is bigger but not as striking to behold). Despite its great age it is still frequently used for operatic and theatrical performances as well as for concerts. There can be few more memorable experiences than sitting here as night falls, watching a performance, the ancient world tangible through the stone.
