London has justifiably acquired a reputation as one of the most expensive cities in the world when it comes to hotels, but a stay in the UK capital needn’t make your wallet weep. As well as world-famous grand dames, like the Dorchester and the Savoy, London also has a number of pioneering boutique hotels, venues where that term signifies more than just smaller rooms and mismatched furnishings. The Zetter is a case in point. This edgy Clerkenwell residence was the brainchild of restaurateurs Michael Benyan and Mark Sainsbury. They succeeded in transforming a five storey warehouse into a hotel that was both comfortable and highly stylish, and crucially, not likely to give your bank manager a brain bleed.
The 59 rooms combine original 19th century features with chic, contemporary artworks and furniture. If you want to splash out than opt for one of the rooftop studios, which boast floor-to-ceiling windows and ample patios from which to soak up some superb views of the city skyline. Given Benyan and Sainsbury’s background, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the Zetter’s bar and restaurant have become just as popular with hungry locals as with hotel guests - the kitchen is reliable and occasionally inspired, and, in summer, you can eat outside in lovely St John's Square.

Never stayed in the hotel but I had a wonderful night in the restaurant there, really nice place and great food. Maybe I'll book a room next time I plan a weekend in London!
