From an architectural perspective, Switzerland’s Therme Vals spa is quite extraordinary. It’s an astonishing building, designed by renowned architect Peter Zumthor, hewn out of mountain rock and standing out dramatically against its idyllic mountain village setting. Since opening in 1996, the baths have drawn visitors from across the globe keen to see this unique building and make use of the spa facilities. Housed in an imposing cube-shaped building, the thermal baths are reached through a narrow tunnel, that leads visitors into the very heart of the rock. The interior is made up of concrete slabs and walls of layered quartz, giving it a tranquil, cave-like feel, though there are three huge windows on one side of the building that offer stunning views of the valley and stop the gloom from becoming too oppressive. Therme Vals is a unique place that will thrill anyone with an eye for design at its most forward-looking.
