It is the largest fish market in the world - and why wouldn't it be? Japan consumes a third of the world's daily catch and the citizens of Tokyo have to buy it somewhere. Head early for Tsukiji train station and follow the crowds. And by early we mean before 6am when the fish has just come in. All around you cranes are lifting crates of eel, forklifts are spinning around with boxes of Tasmanian salmon, Greenland prawns and Chilean bass. Best of all are the tuna auctions, when the shouting drowns out conversation and competition is fierce. You can get an English guide at the market office next to the entrance and when it all seems a little overwhelming, head for the sushi restaurants nearby: its guaranteed the seaweed and sashimi will be fresh.

Reviews of Tsukiji Fish Market

Obviously you'll need to go here very early, so it might be advisable to carry on through from the night before. Wander through the stalls, dodging the forklift trucks full of frozen tuna, and may sure you stop off for some of the freshest sushi you're ever likely to eat!
