This maritime museum in Stockholm really is one of the most extraordinary museums in Europe. No, really. The Vasa Museum is home to the royal flagship Vasa, an elaborately ornamented Swedish galleon. Though unquestionably grand, the ship also has a tragic-comic quality. On its maiden voyage in 1628, in front of thousands of onlookers and just ten minutes after setting sail, it capsized and sank almost instantly, settling on the bottom of Stockholm harbor. It was raised from the seabed in 1961 and found to be incredibly well-preserved, protected from decay by the thick Baltic mud if the seabed. Having been painstakingly restored to her former glory, the ship now resides in a purpose-built museum. Anyone one with an interest in maritime history will, of course, find the Vasa fascinating, and even those whose knowledge of such things is minimal will be blown away by the sheer size of this cannon-laden beast. It’s a truly awe-inspiring sight.

Reviews of Vasa Museum

The Vasa is more than just a restoration, but a study in preservation that is on going to this day. Several friends have come to the Vasa and all came away with an appreciation for life in 1628.
