In the fashion world there’s a tendency to exaggerate, to overstate things, but when it’s said that the Viktor and Rolf store in Milan turns interior design on its head, it can for once be taken literally. Because the Dutch design duo’s first signature shop is one of the most distinctive looking boutiques you’ll ever see. Inside, the entire décor is constructed in an upside-down fashion, which means oak parquet on the ceiling and chandeliers sprouting out of the floor like fountains. What saves this surrealist vision from feeling like a cheap gimmick is the attention to detail in the design, and the sense of humour on display; details like the welcome mat – located on the ceiling. There has, of course, been no mucking about with clothes, which remain as striking and covetable as ever, and fortunately are hung the right way up!
