Paris may be the undisputed foodie capital of Europe, and Spain may lead the way whn it comes to pushing back gastronomic boundaries, but these days London isn’t looking too shabby as a city of significance for the stomach-orientated individual. The days when olive oil could only be purchased in chemists are long gone. Proof of this fact, if proof were needed, is the existence of Villandry. This Fitzrovia delicatessen is a London institution.
Once an endearingly-ramshackle shop full of imported goodies on Marylebone High Street, its popularity was such it was forced to move to larger premises. Now based on Great Portland Street, it’s a sprawling, gorgeous food store, crammed with every gourmet delicacy a hungry man could want. Cured hams and salamis from all over Europe, a vast array of cheeses, a splendid selction of freshly baked cakes and pastries. The takeaway counter is bursting with yummy things to enhance any dinner party: ham and mozzarella calzone; cod wrapped in prosciutto; delicious cassoulet.
Villandry these days even encompasses an informal restaurant area were you can sample some of the shop’s best produce over a glass of chilled sancerre.
