For a real flavour of the Australian outback, a visit to a working cattle station is a must.
Most of Australia's remaining cattle stations are located in the north and the central regions of the Australian Outback. Because the land is dry and the vegetation sparse they tend to be huge sprawling places, a large amount of land being necessary to support enough cattle to make a living. Because of the rugged nature of the outback a lot of the cattle mustering is still done on horseback, but helicopters and motor bikes are also now used by the cowboys and cowgirls (known as jackaroos and jillaroos) to help with rounding up cattle. If you’re touring the outback then visiting one of these places is an invaluable way to see how the relationship between man and the land has evolved in this often inhospitable environment.
