The 16th century Berkshire village of Bray is little short of foodie heaven. Not only is it the home of the award-magnet that is Heston Blumenthal’s world famous Fat Duck, but it also boasts The Waterside Inn, owned by the famous Roux family. Control of the kitchen may have passed from Michel Roux to his son, Alain, but the restaurant still serves food of the very, very highest quality (we’re talking three Michelin stars) in a beautiful riverside setting. The Inn is almost the antithesis of the Fat Duck – there is no molecular tinkering here, instead cooking is traditionally French, but not unimaginative. And it’s not just the food that excites – standards of service are also impeccably high. The Waterside Inn is a restaurant with rooms, so when one is happily full of wine and food, it is only a short stumble to a comfortable bed and a heavy satisfied sleep. There are numerous more flashy restaurants in the UK, but few are as consistently exceptional on every level as this place.

As a regular at the Waterside I look forward to the complete experience. From the moment you pull up outside and your car is parked for you to the relaxed but highly efficient service from what is a quite clearly a restaurant that is passionate about making you feel at home. The food is excellent and yes possibly its neighbour The Fat Duck is more inventive however you experience truly great food cooked to perfection. The tasting menu is a must to fully appreciate the flavours of the kitchen. Unlike some more modern restaurants you will not leave wondering why you didn't select from the main menu. To complete your experience take cofee and petit fours in the lounge area. It truly is a great experence without the commercialism of the Fat Duck or Gordon Ramsey's, both of whom serve exceptional food but are not the complete experience.
