The Widder is one of Switzerland’s coolest and most luxurious hotels. Consisting of a number of interconnected buildings clustered around a central courtyard in Zurich’s historic heart, it is a hotel of real character in a city that is often accused of being, well, a bit lacking in that quality. Refreshingly, the architects brought in to complete the project attempted to keep something of the buildings’ individual features instead of merging everything blandly together. Care was also taken to retain the original stone walls – as well as the distinctive murals, frescos, and ceilings – and the result is a unique hotel where every room is different. Furnishings compliment this thoughtful approach, creating accommodation that is both very atmospheric but also stylish and in keeping with contemporary tastes. The Widder Hotel Bar is one of the best places in Zurich to sip a cocktail of an evening.
