Mongolia calls those who seek the wild and free. The land of Genghis Khan, bears, moose, ibex, contortionists, Stalinist architecture and the glorious Gobi desert will change you forever if you are prepared to put to one side western privileges. To experience this fantastic country you must stop thinking bricks and mortar and think felt and skins. The Mongolians are nomadic and even in these days of increased urbanisation they tend to live in big round tents that they call Gers and we imperialists call Yurts. The design has been perfected over generations to suit the needs of its inhabitants – warm in the freezing winters and cool and refreshing in the summer. It can be set up quickly, collapse in the flash of an eye, and if you can stay a week or even a few days in one you will get a remarkable sense of one of remotest countries on earth.
